Spring Fundraiser — Growing the Water & Drought Awareness Program
We are still celebrating the Water and Drought Awareness Program this week with the virtual spring fundraiser. Since the program’s creation in 2018, we’ve collected hydrological monitoring data and shared informational materials, specifically through our monthly Water Reports. However, this program still has space to grow and develop to benefit the community! CVA staff and programmatic goals are to expand and grow the Water and Drought Awareness Program through increased outreach materials and monitoring of water resources in the Centennial Valley by:
Adding up to five (5) new rain gauges at mid-elevation sites to capture precipitation data for a well-rounded precipitation analysis of the Centennial Valley. Currently, staff are gathering data from CVA rain gauges on the valley floor and at SNOTEL sites. Additional rain gauges at mid-elevation sites will be beneficial for a more informed look at precipitation patterns throughout the valley in the spring, summer, and fall months.
Developing monthly Water Topics, which we launched in early 2024. These monthly reports will be sent out in addition to our Water Reports, but they will focus on a specific watershed topic. This will be an exciting way to broaden our water outreach material and share new, old, or refresher information with the community! We’ve recently highlighted Spring Runoff and Snow Drought. What did you think!?
Integrating soil moisture monitoring into the program by adding at least four (4) soil moisture testing sites on the valley floor. This will provide information on current hydrologic conditions and water retention, which is beneficial for vegetation and soil health indicators.
We need your support to maximize our staff and programmatic efforts to bring more information and monitoring to the community. By donating, sharing this program with others, or becoming a committed volunteer, you will directly support CVA's on-the-ground staff that are collecting this data to share with you!
